Project Overview

For one year, beginning on June 26, 2011, I will produce a series of videos at the direction of friends, acquaintances, or anyone else. Finding a playful commonality between the number of weeks in a year and the roughly 52 second duration of the original Lumiere motion pictures, Fiftytwo will require me to shoot and edit 52 videos, each with a time limit of 52 seconds. Each piece will be based on a sentence, contributed by someone else, that will serve as a makeshift script for that week’s video. The sentence can be a piece of original writing, a line lifted from an existing text, an overheard utterance, or any other form of language.

The purpose of this website is to gather contributors for this exercise. If you are interested in signing up to donate a sentence please reserve a week by clicking one of the weeks below. On the next page, follow the guidelines for filling out the sign-up form. You are only allowed to sign up for one time. At the end of the year, the clips will be compiled into a single video piece that can exist on multiple platforms.

Project Rules for the Artist

    1. The artist has only one week to conceptualize, shoot, and edit each video piece.

    2. Following the inspiration of the Lumiere films, the videos must be a continuous shot and last exactly 52 seconds.

    3. The speed may be altered, but no splicing is allowed.

Project Rules for the Contributors

    1. Submissions may be sent only on the Saturday prior to the week you signed up for. Ex)If you signed up for Week 10: August 28 ~ September 3, your submission must be done on Saturday, August 27 between midnight and 11:59 pm.

    2. The piece of text must be something that the contributor encountered, heard, or wrote on the day of the submission (Saturday).

    3. The participant should indicate the source of the sentence being submitted.

Please sign up to reserve a week that you wish to participate by contributing a sentence for the project. Following Rule #2 for the contributors, you should not have a sentence ready at the time you reserve the spot. Instead, you will be notified by the artist before the due date and should generate the sentence the Saturday of the submssion. If the box in the chart below is dark grey, it means that week is available. All the links below remain active so you can preview previously completed submissions.

Thank you.
